Helping
Hands Cambodia
An overview of
our current work (June 08)
Below you can see an overview
of some of Helping Hands Cambodia's current projects. This page is
still under construction and in time you will be able to read
about each project in much more detail.
We presently work in two
villages called Prasat Char and Lberk which are located about 25
km's from Siem Reap.

OUR SCHOOL

We have built a school in the
village of Prasat Char. Amongst other things, we teach the
children English, Cambodian reading and writing to a kindergarten
class and health and hygiene related issues. All
the students are provided with everything they need to attend
school (stationery, etc) as well as school uniforms. Click
here to read a newsletter about our school. |
OUR BREAKFAST PROGRAMME

All the students (approximately)
that attend our school in the morning receive a nutritious
breakfast.
The meal they receive is prepared
in accordance with guidelines from the World Food Programme and is
aimed at combating protein malnutrition.
It costs approximately 20c (USD) per day
per child. |
CHILD HEALTH PROGRAMME

We partner with Angkor Hospital
for Children and they recently sent a medical team consisting of
six doctors plus support staff to our school.
In the space of one day more than
250 children were seen by the doctors.
This resulted in 30 being taken to hospital for
a range of ailments, a proposed ear clinic
for children with ear problems and an impending dental clinic. |
EYE CARE PROGRAMME

We help people to obtain
treatment for eye problems.
We have helped over 30 people
receive treatment.
One woman who was blind for
more than 20 years can now see.

AGRICULTURAL TRAINING

We
employ a young Cambodian lady who is university trained in
agriculture to conduct training courses at our school. We
have just finished the first 12 week training course which proved
such a success that we will continue on with another course.
Around 15 people completed the first course. |
BUILDING ROADS
This project is operated in
conjunction with our work for a bicycle project. In
order to receive a bicycle the villagers work on fixing or
building a road in their village. In
the above photo the villagers of Lberk build up a road that is
normally just an ox cart track. This wet season, for the
first time, they wont have to walk through water to get to and
from their houses.
|
BUILDING BRIDGES

Helping Hands has now built two
bridges in Prasat Char making life much easier for the villagers. We
organise the building of the bridges, but the villagers themselves
do the actual labour.
|
COMMUNITY INCOME
GENERATION PROJECT

Our
Community Income Generation project involves training a group of
villagers how to make various saleable products. The
aim is that eventually they will be able to run this whole project
by themselves. |
|
WORK FOR A BIKE PROJECT

So far, every household in both
Prasat Char and Lberk village have received a bicycle from
us. They aren't just given the bikes though, they have to
earn them by doing several days work on a building or road project
in their village. We have now given out over 510 bicycles.
Giving someone a bike means they have access to school, work,
health care facilities, etc. Furthermore,
by ensuring the villagers work for the bike we are also building
up their dignity and sense of being able to help themselves. You

COMMUNITY EDUCATION
CONCERTS

We
have found that a very effective way to educate a large number of
people about a specific topic is to hold a concert. So far
we have had two concerts with another planned for this week. The
aim of the first concert was to educate people about dengue fever
(last year was the worst year on record in Cambodia for dengue
fever.) The second concert
was to introduce ourselves to Lberk village and teach them that we
are not about giving handouts, instead we aim to help them help
themselves. The third
concert will address two issues: good decision making and
being responsible for your child's health. |
THE HELPING HANDS TEAM

The Helping Hands team has grown
a lot over the last 12 months. We now employ 7 Cambodian
staff (two field workers, three teachers, one gardener and one
cook/ maintenance man.) There's also myself, Deborah (I started
Helping Hands) and Meaghan from America (we both work on a
voluntary basis.) One of
our staff, Set, actually asked us to take her three children and
put them in an orphanage because she was too poor to look after
them. Instead we decided to give her a job so that she could
keep them with her and give them a future. You
can click here to read her story.

DONORS & VOLUNTEERS

Helping
Hands has a wonderful support network of donors and volunteers
across the globe. In fact, Helping Hands is only able to
exist because of the generous financial support of our donors, who
on the most part, are just regular people. We
also have many wonderful people who come and volunteer at our
school (mainly helping in English classes). You
can click here to read stories from our volunteers.
